At the start of the year, we will normally plan our lives, our career, holidays etc. But at some time in the year, we should take stock – see if we are realistically achieving what we had planned. So, why not look at this at the half way point, namely in June. Are we making good progress? If this is so, then we are on the right track. If not, then we need to have a closer look and see what steps we need to take in order to achieve the goal.
One major error we make is to look at our job and not our career. Our job is here today and gone tomorrow. We tend to change our jobs. We rarely change our careers. Our career is more long term, probably for our entire live. Our career will give us rewards and elevation in our status.

In order to find the ideal career, we need to be quite critical about ourselves. For instance, what are our strengths? What are we good at? It could be by being part of a team, planning events, working alone,
being in the office or perhaps out of the office. From this we can then find the industry to which we should channel our focus. Our next point is where do we see ourselves in the future – 1 year or 2 years? Finally, how can we get from where we are to where we see ourselves in the future?

We may have to continue our education in whatever format – university, college or being trained at work. How much can we invest in ourselves in terms of time and money?
There may be opportunities within our company, possibly in accounts or administration etc. Are we equipped for that role? If not, we should do something about it as we do need to focus on our goal. It could be our company is not keen on transferring us as they feel we do not have what it takes to undertake this role. For example we may be in Administration and are keen to be in accounts but we lack the necessary qualification.

Therefore we need to take those necessary steps for us to achieve our goals. With this in mind, we can enrol on a book keeping course which would give the necessary foundation. This will also give us a clear
understanding of the elements of book keeping. It may be a sacrifice on our part but it will be worth it in the end.

Once we have completed the course, we may be motivated and eager to take our training further along the accounting line. The sky is the limit!
When we review our year at year-end, we will certainly have great satisfaction that we have achieved what we set out to do. This will give a great boost to our confidence and status.
