Procrastination is a common problem with most people but it is a problem that you can conquer
with some effort.

For instance, you may have an assignment or job you simply cannot get started. You have that overpowering urge to do any other activities as long as it is not that task. Are you familiar with that sense of dread whenever you think about it? You really do need to make that conscious effort to beat procrastination and not have it dominate your life.

The first major step towards overcoming procrastination is planning. Your task may seem too big and unachievable if you have not planned it properly.

Where do you start? Ideally you should break the task down into smaller chunks. With big chunks, our mind’s eye simply cannot see a way to start and complete the task. You should keep breaking the chunks down into smaller chunks until you can focus and able to make a start. For instance if you have to redecorate a room, you may look at the 4 walls and ceiling and think where do I start? By breaking it down into chunks you will find it easier – so you buy paint, wash the walls, protect furniture and floor, and then paint the ceiling first then work your way around the room by painting from one side. This is careful planning which is the foundation of any project whether it is large or small.

You may have inner fears about tackling the project. It is worth the while to spend some little time to discover these fears. Once you are aware of them, it will be a lot easier to overcome them so you can tackle the project. It could be that you need to update your skills in order to be proficient or you need advice or discuss it with your team.

Success at work

Can it also be that you are procrastinating because you hate the job? Is this task totally new to you? So look at it as a challenge and how you can make it enjoyable and, lastly, remember this will be a new skill to add to your CV.

Lastly, are you procrastinating because you fear you will fail at the project? If so, take a look at the penalties of failing and, also, take a look at the penalties of not starting. Think of your career.
Discover what motivates you. Look at the benefits of starting and concluding this project. Therefore look at the benefits of getting started and the benefits of completing this task. Finally there will be the general feel of great satisfaction knowing you have achieved another goal.
